No. 1 West Virginia edges Texas soccer team 1-0

Posted October 23rd, 2016

Carla Portillo’s strike in the 79th minute gave top-ranked West Virginia a 1-0 victory over Texas on Sunday at Myers Stadium.

The Mountaineers (15-1-1, 7-0) extended their conference unbeaten streak to 20-0-2, a Big 12 record, and have won eight straight. West Virginia clinched its fifth straight Big 12 title earlier this week.

Goalie Paige Brown and the Texas defense held the Mountaineers to their lowest shot total this season, and Brown finished with three saves. West Virginia averaged nearly 22 shots per game heading into the match and managed 12 against Texas on Sunday. Texas (8-8-1) dropped to 1-5-1 in Big 12 play.

“I just can’t say it enough, I’m so proud of our squad.” said Texas head coach Angela Kelly. “The effort this weekend, following a battle on Friday night and to have this type of response on a Sunday against the number one team in the country, is fantastic.” added Kelly.

West Virginia goalie Michelle Newhouse had six saves as the Longhorns attempted more shots against the Mountaineers than any conference opponent this season. West Virginia has shutout seven straight Big 12 teams and has allowed just six goals this season.

“We had chances, their goalkeeper played fantastic, and with a team like that, you have to take those chances. You’re not going to be getting chances all night, and you’re going to have to be able to put one of those away.” said Kelly.

The Longhorns put three shots on goal in the first half, a season-high allowed by the West Virginia defense in conference play, and Brown had two saves at the break.

Portillo broke the scoring drought in the 79th minute with a shot from 23 yards out that cruised over a crowd of defenders, hit the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.

“I think it was well-taken. She cleaned up a bouncing ball 23 yards out and took a whirl.” said Kelly of the game-winning goal. “It was a heck of a strike.”
