Texas soccer team’s season ends with 3-2 loss to TCU

Posted October 28th, 2016

The Texas soccer team’s season came to an end with a 3-2 loss to TCU Friday night in Fort Worth.

The loss, along with a double-overtime victory by Texas Tech, kept the Longhorns out of the Big 12 Soccer Championship. The injury-plagued Longhorns finished the season at 8-9-1 and placed last in the conference at 1-6-1.

Texas entered the match in seventh place in the Big 12 and could have advanced to the tournament with a win, tie or loss as long as the Red Raiders lost or tied against Oklahoma. Lade King’s goal in the 103rd minute gave the Red Raiders the last spot in the tournament. The top eight teams in the nine-team league moved on the conference championship.

The victory gave TCU (10-5-2, 2-5-1) the seventh seed in the tournament.

The Horned Frogs took the lead 3 minutes 39 seconds in to the match. Following a turnover by the Longhorns, TCU pushed the ball downfield and Karitas Tomasdottir found Emma Heckendorn wide open in the middle of the penalty box, and she sent a shot to left side past Texas goalie Paige Brown.

Chelsea Surpris tied it in the eighth minute with a strike from 25 yards out that sailed into the upper corner of the goal.

The Longhorns took the lead in the 13th minute when Morgan Murphy hit a back-heeled shot from inside a crowd at the top of the penalty box and into the left edge of the net.

The TCU offense continued to pressure the Texas defense and McKenzie Oliver knocked in the equalizer in the 38th minute.

The Horned Frogs took the lead in the 63rd minute when a corner kick was headed towards a crowd in front of the goal and Allison Ganter hit a header past Brown. It was Ganter’s sixth goal of the season.
