Reports: Former Texas assistant Jeff Traylor joins SMU coaching staff

Posted February 7th, 2017

Former Texas assistant coach Jeff Traylor has joined the coaching staff at SMU, according to various reports.

Before being hired by Charlie Strong at Texas, Traylor was the head football coach at Gilmer High School and became one of the Longhorns’ top recruiters. Like Traylor, SMU coach Chad Morris is a former Texas high school football head coach, with his most success coming in the Austin area at Lake Travis. The two coaches also have ties to the East Texas area where Morris was the head coach at Elysian Fields and Traylor at Jacksonville.

Traylor, like all of Strong’s assistants, was not retained following the December coaching change. Most of Strong’s staff have landed new jobs since then.

Former Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, offensive line coach Matt Mattox, linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary and receivers coach Charlie Williams all followed Strong to South Florida.
