Charlie Strong: “I’m not going to give Texas that pleasure”

Posted February 27th, 2017

Charlie Strong spent 19 days unemployed after he was fired by Texas on Nov. 26.

As he told CBS Sports senior writer Dennis Dodd for a story published Monday, Strong wasn’t intent on staying put too long.

“I was like, ‘This damn job will take my mind away from [what happened],’” he said. “’I’m not going to give Texas that pleasure.’”

Strong is now more than two months into his new job at South Florida. In perhaps the most candid interview he has given since landing in Tampa, he discussed the exit at Texas and how he views his next stop as an opportunity to put that frustration behind him.

Unlike when he arrived at Texas, Strong is inheriting a fully loaded Bulls squad that finished 11-2 with a win over South Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl. Many of the pieces return, including star quarterback Quentin Flowers.

Still, Texas fans could interpret the quote Dodd placed at the end of the story as a parting shot.

“It’s not like you’re walking into a situation,” Strong said, “where a guy got fired.”
