Home runs down Longhorns softball team in Waco

Posted May 5th, 2017

A pair of home runs was all the Baylor Bears needed to top the Texas Longhorns softball team 2-1 in a Big 12 contest in Waco on Friday evening.

The loss is the Longhorns’ 11th of the season by one run.

Sydney Christensen and Shelby McGlaun homered in back-to-back innings to provide the only offense the No. 17 Bears (40-10, 12-4 Big 12) needed.

Erica Wright (6-6) suffered the loss, allowing both Baylor runs on four hits through 3 2/3 innings. She walked four and struck out just two batters.

Kelsee Selman (20-7) earned the win for Baylor, as she gave up a single run on four hits through seven innings. She walked two and struck out three.

Kelli Hanzel was 2 for 3 at the plate with Bekah Alcozer providing the only RBI for Texas (29-21, 6-9). Alcozer reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Tuesday DerMargosian to score in the fifth inning.

After two scoreless innings, Chritensen put Baylor out front with a solo home run in the third. An inning later, McGlaun doubled the lead on her solo shot to left field.

The Longhorns softball team nearly tied the game in the seventh, but Hanzel was thrown out at home on a single by Jade Gortarez to end the game.

The three-game series will shift to Austin as the next two contests will be played at McCombs Field. Both games start at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
