Texas draws Texas State and Texas A&M in tournament-opening regional

Posted May 14th, 2017

Texas is heading back to the postseason.

Texas is one of 64 teams that has qualified for the Division I softball tournament, the NCAA announced on Sunday night. The Longhorns (31-24) were placed in a College Station-hosted regional that includes Texas State (41-15), Texas A&M (42-10) and Texas Southern (24-18).

Texas will attempt to avenge this season’s two one-run losses to Texas State when those teams meet in a tournament-opening match-up at 4 p.m. on Friday. Texas A&M and Texas Southern will also battle in this double-elimination regional competition.

If it is the last team standing in College Station, Texas will advance to next week’s Super Regionals. The College World Series is then set to begin on June 1. Texas last reached the College World Series in 2013.

Texas last missed the NCAA tournament during a 2004 season in which it went 24-25. Heading into this weekend’s Big 12 tournament, though, Texas was considered to be on the bubble. However, it appears that the Longhorns’ win total and RPI (Texas was ranked 33rd this week) was enough to sway the selection committee.
