Townley Haas and Jack Conger take bronze at FINA World Championships

Townley Haas, a junior at UT, and former Longhorn Jack Conger took third place as members of Team USA’s 800-meter freestyle relay team at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary Friday.

The duo, alongside Blake Pieroni and Zane Grothe, finished the race in 7 minutes, 3.18 seconds, behind Great Britain and Russia. Great Britain took gold in 7:01.70 and Russia finished in 7:02.68. Haas and Conger won gold in the event at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Haas gave the U.S. the lead after the second leg, swimming a split of 1:44.58. It was the second-fastest leg of the 32 finalists.

Conger finished his leg in 1:45.37 and with the U.S. in the lead.

In other action, Joseph Schooling finished his 100 butterfly semifinal heat in 50.78 to take first place. He had the fourth best time in the semifinals and will swim in Saturday’s final.
