What Tom Herman said after Texas lost to Maryland 51-41

Posted September 2nd, 2017

Things did not go as planned for Texas during the first game of the Tom Herman era.

The Longhorns fell 51-41 to Maryland, and looked very much like the same team that finished 5-7 under Charlie Strong in 2016. Afterward, Herman spoke to the media about what went wrong in his debut.

‘Why can’t we get out of our own way?’

After trailing 27-7 in the first half, Texas mounted a comeback behind a Holton Hill return off a blocked field goal by Poona Ford and a 91-yard punt return by freshman Reggie Hemphill-Mapps.

The Longhorns cut the lead to 37-34 late in the third quarter, but then watched the Terrapins score 14 unanswered points in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

“Why can’t we get out of our own way?,” Herman pondered when asked about the failed comeback. It’s a question Texas fans have been asking for several years.

He also said, “We need to find a way to manufacture some big plays.” Texas’ longest offensive play of the game went for 33 yards to Armanti Foreman. The pass from Shane Buechele was the first offensive score of the game for the Longhorns, and it came with 7:20 left in the third quarter.

The longest run for Texas was a 21-yard burst by Lil’Jordan Humphrey out of the “wildcat” formation.

Buechele completed 34 of 52 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a costly interception in the first quarter that led to Maryland’s first touchdown. Herman said he never considered pulling Buechele for freshman Sam Ehlinger.

Buckeye blueprint?

Herman has experience with embarrassing season openers. In 2014, he was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State when the Buckeyes fell to Virginia Tech in Columbus.

Ohio State turned out to be just fine that season, as it won 13 straight games to capture the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship. Herman brought up that loss to Virginia Tech in his postgame press conference.
