A new Associated Press poll ballot and a new No. 1.
Well, actually it’s an old No. 1.
I leapfrogged Alabama back into the top spot ahead of Clemson, which struggled before pulling away with an easy win over Boston College. By virtue of its 59-0 spanking of Vanderbilt and its heralded defense, the Crimson Tide showed once more.
College football is Alabama and everyone else. With Clemson at least in the neighborhood.
TCU was the big winner, whipping Oklahoma State soundly on the road and jumping to No. 3 in my vote. Gary Patterson’s team “wanted to be relevant,” and, believe me, the Horned Frogs are. The Cowboys fell to No. 13 on my ballot with lots to prove.
Teams that continue to impress are Georgia (fifth), Washington (seventh), Virginia Tech (12th). Newcomers on my ballot include North Carolina State (19th), which knocked off Florida State and bumped the Seminoles out of my Top 25; unbeaten Duke (24th) and undefeated Texas Tech (25th), which clipped Houston on the road.
Here’s my ballot:
- Penn State
- Ohio State
- Virginia Tech
- Oklahoma State
- San Diego State
- Washington State
- North Carolina State
- South Florida
- Texas Tech
