Texas 23, Baylor 17: Longhorns finish disappointing season in style

WACO — Wounded teams are always the most dangerous. And shame on anyone who underestimates any rival. Baylor players spent considerable time in pre-game warmups chirping about how Saturday’s game would be easy. Texas was 4-7, after all. Even with a third-string quarterback, the Bears would whip the downtrodden Longhorns and go to the Sugar Bowl, right? “We just came out and had nothing to lose,” Texas tight end Alex De La Torre said. “Why not go out there and play your butt off and go win?” Running back Johnathan Gray said, “This was our bowl game.” Texas finished a disappointing season in the most uplifting way possible — by beating 12th-ranked Baylor, 23-17, at McLane Stadium. It’ll go down as Texas’ only true road win of the year, its first in Waco since 2009 and first road win over a ranked team since 2012. When historians reminisce about the … Read more

There were 157 snaps taken in Texas’ 23-17 stunning win over Baylor. Here are five that ended up making a big difference. 1. Fast start No one will mistake Texas’ offense for Clemson’s, but the schools are even in a somewhat obscure stat: plays of 40 yards or more.  The Longhorns … Read More

Notebook: Swoopes, Norvell put together winning formula

WACO — In what may be their final games in their current roles, Jay Norvell and Tyrone Swoopes went out as winners. The Texas play-caller and his quarterback enjoyed their finest moments in crunch time of Saturday’s 23-17 upset over No. 12 Baylor. Twice, … Read More

Texas vs. Baylor: Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (5-7, 4-5) WON: If you’re an optimist, Texas won because it had nothing to lose, played past all the injuries and rallied around backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes, doing just enough offensively and just enough defensively to head into this offseason happy that even on a down year, there … Read More

Basically, it was throw-the-plan-out-the-window for QB-challenged Baylor

WACO — The Baylor offensive coaches, even the players, spent much of the second quarter in a desperate sort of fog, trying to figure out the best way to revive a game plan that was nullified by a single hit on a quarterback. Chris Johnson, the Bears’ third-string quarterback, suffered … Read More

Texas wins the game, but melee ruled a draw

WACO — Had it been up to the initial participants, a melee involving Texas and Baylor would have never broken out. Lynx Hawthorne, whose vicious slam of Texas cornerback Duke Thomas set off a benches-clearing spectacle, had simply wished to retreat to his sideline. Thomas wanted to … Read More

Bohls: For Charlie Strong, eight is enough in 2016 … maybe

WACO — When his Texas football team reported for fall practice in August, my first question to Charlie Strong was this: Is it possible your team could be worse this season than it was last year, when it went 6-7? Strong turned his head sideways and, somewhat flustered, said, “Wow. Read More

Bests, Worsts from Texas-Baylor

Best strategy Baylor coach Art Briles is the mastermind. Reduced to playing his fourth-string quarterback who is listed as a wide receiver, Briles went exclusively to the Wildcat offense and churned out 69 yards on eight plays for a touchdown. The Bears ran out of that alignment for 15 of … Read More
