Bohls: For Texas and Strong, this was more millstone moment than milestone

The stage was set. All the elements were in place. The frenzied crowd was on its feet, lungs bared, mouths roaring their delight on every snap of the ball. The team that couldn’t score more than a field goal in South Bend was poised to put up 45 points and probably more on this muggy Saturday evening. The comeback was nearly complete. The hero would soon be fitted for his crown. It had everything but the correct finish. Nick Rose, wide right. There’d be no overtime, only the agony of defeat. The local favorites had lost again. Cal 45, Texas 44. Someone hacked into the script. This was to be the defining moment, the jumping-off spot for Charlie Strong’s program, the milestone win that would launch him and his team toward higher heights, more victories, maybe even a championship down the horizon. None of that was guaranteed, of course, but … Read more

A thorny end to Rose’s night, but teammates defend him

Poor Nick Rose. By all accounts, Texas’ kicker is a good guy and a favorite among his teammates. He posts fun kicking videos to social media, lets his hair grow to ridiculous lengths, and hangs out with linebackers, which is not exactly common of a … Read More

Jerrod Heard leads Texas to eighth-best offensive night ever

Jay Norvell was practically giddy talking about Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard’s 45-yard touchdown run at the end of Saturday’s 45-44 loss to California. “The quarterback draw was about as beautiful a play I’ve seen in a long time,” the UT play-caller said. What came afterward wasn’t so great, though. “My … Read More

Golden: Heard equals hope for future, but for present, too

Jerrod Heard gets what it means to be a big-time quarterback. He isn’t there yet, but count me as one who can’t wait to see him grow up at the position. The clutch gene isn’t given to all, but the kid has it from top to bottom, from the retro … Read More

Notebook: Texas loses some security at safety position against Cal

What little depth Texas has at safety was put to the test against Cal. Kevin Vaccaro and P.J. Locke manned the back end of the defense nearly the entire night in Saturday’s 45-44 loss. Vaccaro entered on Texas’ second defensive drive when Dylan Haines … Read More

Cal 45, Texas 44: Rose’s miss was big, but other mistakes hurt, too

Kickers are automatic, usually. Extra-point attempts are easy, right? The first two weeks of the season, 89 kickers across the country were perfect drilling what are essentially 20-yard field goals. When it came time for Nick Rose to boot an extra point and tie things up against California, Texas coach … Read More

Cal 45, Texas 44: The expanded boxscore

FIRST QUARTER Texas 7, Cal 7 — Who said Jerrod Heard couldn’t pass? Making his second start, Heard hooked up with Johnson for 45 and 54 yards. And who said Jared Goff couldn’t run? The Cal quarterback, who is typically chained to the pocket, got loose and converted a third-and-10 … Read More

Texas vs. Cal: Horns up, Horns down

HORNS UP Jerrod Heard keeps wowing Texas fans. He finished with 527 yards of total offense, including three touchdown runs, and showed the clutch gene that hasn’t been seen on this campus since Colt McCoy left. Daje Johnson caught five passes for 145 yards and was great after … Read More

Bests & Worsts of Texas vs. Cal

Worst ending With Texas a point away from tying Cal and perhaps forcing overtime, senior Nick Rose saw pressure from a Cal rusher and shanked his extra-point kick to leave the Longhorns with one of their most devastating losses. Best consolation Jerrod Heard was “fabulous,” according to new Longhorn play-caller … Read More

Texas vs. Cal: Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (1-2) LOST: Is it easy enough to just pin it on Nick Rose’s third career missed extra point? No. A successful kick at the end would have only sent this one into overtime. Texas lost because the defense had another long night, because the Longhorns allowed Cal to … Read More

Texas-Cal: Our four pregame questions — answered

On Saturday morning, we asked four questions about the Texas-Cal matchup. Here’s how they played out: WOULD KRIS BOYD CONTINUE TO MAKE AN IMPACT? Rose’s missed PAT dooms Texas in 45-44 loss

Texas’ comeback hopes — which looked so exciting after Jerrod Heard’s electric 45-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the game — were dashed when Nick Rose missed the third extra point of his career. The previous two were nowhere near as big as this. Rose’s missed conversion gave Cal … Read More
