Iowa State 24, Texas 0: Unfocused Horns get hammered by Cyclones

AMES, Iowa — The look on Charlie Strong’s face said it all after Iowa State simply pounded his Texas team on a chilly Saturday night and captured a 24-0 win at Jack Trice Stadium. What was that? “I would’ve thought we were taking steps forward, and then this is just a step backward,” the Longhorns coach said. “I always say to (the players), I just want to see the same team I saw in Dallas that day.” The euphoria from the Oklahoma win and good vibes from the soggy Kansas State victory are distant memories now. Did the Longhorns, not exactly world-beaters themselves, take the Cyclones too lightly? Did they not practice hard enough? Were they not prepared? Was it Jay Norvell’s play-calling? The quarterbacks? The defense? “You can’t turn it on in a game,” guard Sedrick Flowers said. “We’ve heard it all week. How you practice is how you … Read more

Texas vs. Iowa State: Four questions facing the Horns

Four questions facing Texas in Saturday night’s game against Iowa State:   1. Are two quarterbacks better than one? Texas has had its issues defending the pass, which has benefited Cal’s Davis Webb (396 yards), Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph (392) and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield (390) — … Read More

Charlie Strong’s press conference: To be or not to be (embarrassed)

Charlie Strong’s weekly press conference has come and gone. The number of questions over the 30 minutes he fielded directly about Saturday’s game against the Kansas Jayhawks? Zero. Texas gives another lame road showing in blowout at ISU

AMES, Iowa — Yes, Texas was impressive against Oklahoma, but in the context of road games, Charlie Strong doesn’t lump in that one with the others. “That one doesn’t count,” the Texas coach said last week about the neutral-site win last month in Dallas. Here’s … Read More

Charlie Strong: Offensive woes go ‘across the board’

AMES, Iowa — Texas coach Charlie Strong is now 0-10 during his tenure whenever the opposing team scores first. For a coach with a sputtering offense, watching Iowa State take an early 10-point lead en route to a 24-0 win had to be a stomach-churning endeavor. “When you look at … Read More

Notebook: Is it time to make — another — QB change for Texas?

AMES, Iowa — Charlie Strong would not say if he’ll change quarterbacks after Jerrod Heard turned in another uninspiring performance. Strong did not he wouldn’t make the switch, either. Here’s what Strong did say after Saturday’s 24-0 loss at Iowa State: “It’s not only … Read More

Texas vs. Iowa State: Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (3-5, 2-3) LOST: On Halloween night, it was TEXAS … FRIGHT. The offense laid an egg. The defense couldn’t stop freshman running back Mike Warren or control a quarterback making his first college start, running plays called by a new play-caller. The Longhorns were shut out by an … Read More

Bohls: Strong was quick to the defense of his offense

AMES, Iowa — Following Saturday’s game, Charlie Strong defended his offensive coordinator. You know, the new one. He also defended his quarterback. You know, the new one. Both are difficult stances to take since both failed miserably Saturday night. Part of the problem is the fan base is hearing the … Read More
