Texas 59, Kansas 20: Longhorns do what they should, bury winless Jayhawks

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Texas did exactly what it was supposed to do in drumming lowly, still-winless Kansas on Saturday night, 59-20. The 92,529 fans inside Royal-Memorial Stadium walked away happy, as did those in Vegas. One week ago, Texas got shut out against Iowa State. Against Kansas, the Longhorns piled up 598 total yards. Optimists will be happy, but pessimists have a ready-made argument: It was only Kansas, a team that’s now 0-9 and hasn’t won a road game since 2009. “A win’s a win at the end of the day,” defensive lineman Bryce Cottrell said. “It’s better than a loss.” The Longhorns improved to 4-5 overall and still have flickering bowl hopes. Too bad this team can’t stay home the rest of the season. Texas is 0-3 in true road games this year and next comes a journey to West Virginia. “One week, you … Read more

Notebook: Malik Jefferson sick again in win over Kansas

Malik Jefferson was sick to his stomach. And once Charlie Strong saw the way things were going with his middle linebacker on the sideline, his tummy was tossing and turning as well. Jefferson did not start Saturday, and if things had gone a little better in the first half, he wouldn’t … Read More

Texas goes deep early and often in win over Kansas

When the directive came down early in the day, Jerrod Heard and John Burt started scheming. Texas, at last, was going deep. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you hadn’t noticed, the Longhorns haven’t been moving the ball much of late. So play-caller … Read More

Bohls: Just Texas beats just Kansas, but a win is a win

A little Texas win. And a whole lot of healthy perspective. Four-touchdown favorite Texas beat the worst team in the league and maybe the entire land, and yes it beat ’em up pretty good. As the Longhorns should have. And that’s all they did. That said, however, the befuddling Longhorns … Read More

This time, there was no catching D’Onta Foreman

As D’Onta Foreman ran along the left sideline, with his twin brother blocking behind him, he remembered what his friends and family told him after he had been caught from behind against Oklahoma. Against the Sooners, Foreman broke loose for 81 yards — until OU’s Zack Sanchez wrestled him down … Read More

Texas 59, Kansas 20: The expanded boxscore

FIRST QUARTER Texas 17, Kansas 7 — For weeks, Jerrod Heard and Jay Norvell have taken criticism for not throwing deep. On the opening play, they fired back. John Burt got open deep and Heard found him for an 84-yard touchdown. On the next drive, Heard delivered a … Read More

Texas vs. Kansas: Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (4-5, 3-3) WON: Because this was Kansas. Because this was a special night, with all the hoopla over honoring Longhorns legend Freddie Steinmark. Because the Jayhawks ranked dead last nationally in total defense and second-to-last in pass defense. Because Texas had perfect balance (299 passing yards, 299 rushing … Read More

Texas-Kansas: Our four pregame questions — answered

On Saturday morning, we asked four questions about the Texas-Kansas matchup. Here’s how they played out: DID JERROD HEARD FINALLY THROW FOR 100 YARDS? Yes. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen that, though. Heard was 13 of 23 for 201 yards, his first 100-yard game since Oklahoma State. His … Read More

Texas 59, Kansas 20 final recap

Somewhere, Freddie Steinmark is smiling. On a night when Texas went old school to honor the former Longhorns star, the 59-20 win over Big 12 cellar dweller Kansas looked like it was straight out of 1969 as well. In advance of the “My All-American” movie about Steinmark, Texas rededicated the … Read More

Horns leading Kansas at halftime, 24-14

Texas leads Kansas at halftime, 24-14. But it could just as easily be 24-17. Kansas’ last-second field goal attempt to close the first half doinked off the goal post. And it also could just as easily be tied, 24-24. A Jayhawks touchdown was taken away after KU’s Ben Johnson pounced … Read More
