Texas 23, Kansas State 9: Hell, high water both rain down on Wildcats

Texas fans who schlepped in, stood in the rain and got intimate with a $5 poncho should take comfort. The quarterback hated Saturday’s monsoon, too. “I don’t like wet games, I can tell you that right now,” Texas’ Jerrod Heard said. “I was mad. I already knew what kind of game it was going to be.” Texas found a winning formula two weeks ago against Oklahoma, and there’s no sense changing it now — come hell or high water. Plenty of both rained down on Kansas State in a 23-9 victory that gives UT more traction heading into a winnable stretch. Safety Jason Hall almost knocked K-State’s Joe Hubener out on the game’s first play at Royal-Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns’ offensive line followed suit with a nasty performance, helping the offense pile up 274 rushing yards. UT is now 3-4 overall, and locker room confidence is rising. “That’s Texas! That’s … Read more

Longhorns weathered sloppy conditions, but it wasn’t easy

Charlie Strong didn’t control the weather on Saturday, but it didn’t stop his team from controlling every phase of the game against Kansas State. “I can’t stop the rain,” Strong said he told his team during pre-game warmups. “I can’t move the clouds. Let’s just get into it and stop … Read More

Notebook: Tyrone Swoopes keeps finding the end zone

Here’s a question that’ll get the brainwaves moving: Is Tyrone Swoopes’ the offensive MVP for Texas? Golden: A good win, but Heard is no passing fancy

Jerrod Heard couldn’t grip the ball on Saturday, so Texas ran it. And ran it some more. Did I mention the Longhorns ran it 53 times? It’s how Charlie Strong would prefer to win games: Down and dirty with two solid running backs, a quarterback with game-breaking moves in the … Read More

Bohls: An ugly Texas win, but a pretty Texas victory

Texas won this one for Kim Gaynor. There was no official dedication or anything, but it was fitting on this soggy day that the rapidly improving Longhorns won in ugly fashion that recalls a famous quote from the husband of Edith Royal, who was recognized at Saturday’s game on her … Read More

Bests and Worsts from Texas-Kansas State

Worst call Head coach Charlie Strong and play-caller Jay Norvell played it conservative for much of Saturday’s game, but rolled the dice on a third-and-1 at the Texas 39 with less than five minutes to play, trying to protect the lead and milk some clock. Tight end Andrew Beck was … Read More

Texas vs. Kansas State: Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (3-4, 2-2) WON: It wasn’t pretty, but when you’re talking about Kansas State, a win is a win. The Longhorns prevailed because their running game was on (274 yards, an average of 5.2 yards per carry) and the defense stifled the Wildcats for most of the day. And … Read More
