Texas 42, Rice 28: Heard out of ‘prison cell’ as freshmen energize Horns

Freshmen are supposed to be naive and ill-equipped to play right away. They’re supposed to be quiet, yield to the veterans and generally stay out of the way. Freshmen don’t know what they don’t know, supposedly. But even the most popular freshman at Texas believes quarterback Jerrod Heard should’ve been playing more than he was. “All the guys wanted to see him play,” linebacker Malik Jefferson said. “He’s been held back, like in a prison cell.” Texas coach Charlie Strong gave Heard the starting nod just before kickoff on Saturday. That decision energized the locker room and 86,458 fans inside Royal-Memorial Stadium. The youngsters went out, had a field day and played with real energy in a 42-28 win over Rice. The Longhorns (1-1) scored in all three phases to snap a three-game losing skid. Strong made it clear that Heard, the redshirt freshman, will remain the starter. Junior Tyrone … Read more

Despite win, Horns defense couldn’t get off field

A win is a win is a win, but … Texas players and staff weren’t thrilled with the way Saturday’s Rice game played out, save for all their big plays. That’s because the defense was on the field nearly the entire night. Rice ran an astounding 96 plays to a … Read More

Daje Johnson has breakthrough moment many have waited for

Texas receiver Armanti Foreman hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass early against Rice. He came off the field and immediately got in Daje Johnson’s face. “He was telling me, ‘You’re gonna get one, don’t worry about it,’” Johnson said. “So after he scored, I told him, ‘I gotta get me … Read More

Bohls: Heard brought the juice, and it was much needed

The kid's got juice. Real juice. That's undeniable. It was obvious to everyone as soon as Texas' third offensive play of the night, when he bolted through the Rice defense for 50 yards although a penalty negated a bunch of it. And he didn't slow down much after that. Jerrod Heard made the first start of his college career and made it count. So much so that it's safe to say Texas has found its quarterback, and it's been looking since Heard was a ninth-grader. Now Texas should have found him last season as a change of pace or at the very least last week against Notre Dame, when he only got to play five snaps. But that's in the past. Saturday was all about moving forward — the Texas offense, which had been barely moving at all, and perhaps the direction of Charlie Strong's program although offensively stout Cal will have something to say about that next weekend. Golden: Texas is in the win column, but fixes remain

So the Texas Longhorns aren’t going 0-12 after all. The sky and ground didn’t meet in the middle of DKR Saturday night. Jerrod Heard is this team’s quarterback of the present and the future, and the Horns are in the win column. To their credit, they didn’t over-dramatize a win … Read More

Longhorns notebook: Gray held in check (again)

All week long, the Texas coaching staff hinted that Johnathan Gray would be a big part of the offensive game plan against Rice. Turns out the senior running back was almost no factor at all. Gray had nine carries for 17 yards, a 1.9 average. He did have a 1-yard … Read More

Third and Longhorns

WHY TEXAS (1-1) WON: Because Jerrod Heard was electric. Because the Longhorns forced four turnovers. Because Daje Johnson (three returns, 118 yards, one TD) wowed ’em on punts. Because the freshmen, from Heard to John Burt to Kris Boyd to Malik Jefferson, came to play. Because playing in front of … Read More

Bests & Worsts of Texas vs. Rice
