Ariel Atkins, a senior guard for UT, earned a spot on the USA Basketball women’s U23 national team Friday. She spent five days at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and was selected by the Women’s Junior National Team Committee.
The U23 team is scheduled to compete in the inaugural Four Nations Tournament which runs Aug. 12-15 in Tokyo, Japan. The U.S. will take on teams from Australia, Canada and Japan in the round-robin tournament.
Atkins and the team will train at the USOTC through Aug.7 before arriving at Katayanagi Arena where the tournament will take place.
As an All-Big 12 first team selection in her junior season, Atkins averaged 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. She was also named a member of the Big 12 All-Defensive team as she led the league in steals with 2 per game. Atkins shot 81.8 percent from the free-throw line, best on the Longhorns.
Team USA will play Australia on Aug. 12 before facing Canada the next day and Japan on Aug. 15.
