After home runs, why does Texas baseball player Jared Thomas sprint around the bases?

Texas infielder Jared Thomas (9) runs to third base as the Longhorns play San Diego at UFCU Disch–Falk Field on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024.

With seven, Texas first baseman Jared Thomas ranks among the team leaders in home runs.

Over his last few homers, Thomas hasn't spent much time admiring his work. The sophomore has opted to sprint around the bases instead of enjoying a leisurely stroll.

For example, Thomas homered in the fifth inning of an 11-1 win over Abilene Christian on Tuesday. It took him 18 seconds to make his way around the bases.

Texas has referred to Thomas' trot as the "Snake Farm Sprint" on social media, which is also a nod to his popular walk-up song. So, why does Thomas hustle around the bases?

"I'm just trying to have some more substance over style," Thomas said on Tuesday night. "I'm just trying to pass the bat to the next guy as quick as we can. It's not so much about us in that moment, it's about the next guy. Just get the next guy up to the plate and let him do his job."

Texas coach David Pierce said that after the Longhorns were beaten by Kansas State in the opener of a three-game series on March 28, the team talked and "basically we have to earn more. I would prefer them to have a lot more substance and a lot less celebration. We have to play the game the right way with respect."

"(Thomas) kind of took it to another level," Pierce said with a smile.
