Pair of Longhorns qualify for match play at U.S. Amateur

Doug Ghim shot 71 in the second round of the U.S. Amateur Tuesday to secure a spot in match play in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The Texas senior finished stroke play at 2 under par and tied for eighth place. He shot 67 in the first round.

Gavin Hall also qualified for match play as he finished in a tie for 35th after shooting 70 on the day. He improved by two strokes from his first round.

Ghim struggled a bit, but made birdies on three of the last five holes to finish at 1 over par.

“To go 3-under I think on my last four or five feels good,” Ghim said according to a UT press release. “I like match play.”

Ghim set to face Chris Waters at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Hall is scheduled to tee off against Sahith Theegala at 11:40 a.m.

Ghim finished the first round of stroke play in fifth place after he shot 67 late Monday.

In addition to Ghim and Hall, four other Longhorns were in action at the U.S. Amateur, though they were unable to advance.

Scottie Scheffler tied for 57th after a second-round 75. Spencer Soosman shot 74 on the second day to finish tied for 85th.

Kristoffer Reitan, an incoming freshman for UT, shot 71 to tie for 120th while Steven Chervony ended tied at 199th.
