A pair of top-50 national prospects signed with the Texas men’s basketball program Wednesday, but head coach Rodney Terry hopes that class grows by one during this fall signing window.

Cam Scott, a 6-foot-5 guard, joins 6-8 forward Nic Codie in the Longhorns’ 2024 class, which currently is No. 22 nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings. That rating will soar if Texas reels in five-star recruit Tre Johnson, a 6-6 guard from the Dallas area ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the nation. He was the top-ranked recruit in Texas for the 2024 class before transferring to prep school Link Academy in Missouri for his senior year.

Texas head coach Rodney Terry signed a pair of top-50 national prospects this week but has his recruiting sights set on five-star guard Tre Johnson, who's still deciding between the Longhorns and Baylor. Johnson is the No. 5 overall prospect in the country.

Johnson reportedly will decide between Texas and Baylor during the fall signing window or a later window. He’ll also have professional options in the U.S. and overseas.

The 2023 recruitment of five-star prospects proved problematic for Texas, which lost Ron Holland and A.J. Johnson to the professional ranks. But those decommitments won't affect how the Longhorns recruit, Texas coach Rodney Terry said Thursday.

"We're going to continue to recruit the best players in the country and the best players internationally as well, because we can," Terry said. "We have a brand that has the tentacles to be able to do that, so we won't be deterred by a youngster having a chance to, if he got really hot over the course of his season, have other opportunities that present themselves. You deal with that when it comes down the pike."

A couple of impressive players came down the pike Wednesday. Scott, from Lexington, S.C., is the No. 27 prospect in the nation in 247Sports’ composite rankings. During his junior year in 2022-23, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals while leading his team to the state semifinals and earning South Carolina’s Gatorade player of the year award.

Codie, a fast-rising prospect at Carrollton Newman Smith, is the No. 45 prospect nationally in the 247Sports composite and the No. 1 player in the state for the 2024 class. He averaged 16 points and nine rebounds as a junior last season.

“Codie is a player who has made a steady climb over his high school career, with much of his overall game exploding his past spring and summer,” said Blue Zertuche of Great American Shoot-Out. “Texas is getting a prospect who has the athleticism, length and natural ability to compete at an extremely high level in the SEC. He is skilled, has a nice touch from the elbow area and will extend his game past the 3-point arc.”

Terry said he expects both players to make a quick impact on the program once they arrive in Austin.

"We were able to secure two really good signings yesterday," he said. "Our staff did a great job evaluating and getting a chance to develop great relationships, (and) we were able to get two really good, quality players that we think have really high ceilings."
