CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While the Texas basketball team gets ready for Thursday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Colorado State, part of the program’s future earned another prestigious honor.

Guard Cam Scott, a 6-foot-6 senior at Lexington High School in South Carolina who has signed with Texas, earned his second consecutive South Carolina Gatorade Player of the year honor on Thursday. He led Lexington to the Class 5A state title while averaging 22 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.5 assists.

Texas basketball recruit Cam Scott earned his second consecutive South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year honor after leading Lexington High School to a state championship this past season. Scott, a 6-foot-6 guard, was one of three players that signed with Texas in November.

Scott, a four-time all-state player at Lexington, is his school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,475 career points.

Scott is part of an impressive three-player, 2024 class signed by Texas head coach Rodney Terry and his staff in November. He’ll join McDonald’s All-American guard Tre Johnson as well as forward Nic Codie on campus next season. Johnson is ranked as the nation’s sixth-best recruit for the 2024 class by 247Sports while Scott and Codie rank 53 and 67, respectively.

Texas had two highly ranked recruits in the 2023 class, but both Ron Holland and AJ Johnson picked professional opportunities and never enrolled. The 6-5 Johnson, who led Lake Highlands outside of Dallas to a Class 6A state title before playing his senior year at Link Academy in Missouri, will likely have professional options. However, a source in the Texas basketball program said last week that Johnson is expected to spend at least one season at Texas.
