Report: Texas basketball recruit Cam Scott gets released from his UT letter of intent

Texas basketball’s 2024 recruiting class took a hit Saturday when four-star guard Cam Scott received a release from his national letter of intent.

The news was first reported by On3Sports.

Scott, a 6-foot-6 guard from South Carolina, is ranked as the nation’ 53rd overall prospect for his class by 247Sports. Earlier this spring, Scott received his second consecutive South Carolina Gatorade player of the year honor after leading Lexington High School to that state’s Class 5A state title while averaging 22 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.5 assists.

Texas head coach Rodney Terry and his staff signed two other players in November, including McDonald’s All-American guard Tre Johnson and Dallas-area forward Nic Codie. Johnson is ranked as the nation’s sixth-best recruit for the 2024 class by 247Sports while Codie ranks 67th. Both are expected to enroll at Texas this summer.

The loss of Scott weakens a Texas backcourt that lost All-Big 12 guard Max Abmas to graduation and promising freshman Chris Johnson to the portal. Junior Tyrese Hunter is expected to again explore his NBA options but could also return for a third season as a backcourt starter, and sophomore Chendall Weaver will come back as a key member of the rotation.

Texas is also hosting former Indiana State guards Julian Larry and Jayson Kent this weekend, and former Oregon State guard Jordan Pope will visit Austin next week.
