They're No. 1? Texas softball completes sweep of Baylor.

What did Texas do by finishing a series sweep against Baylor with a 9-5 win Sunday at McCombs Field?

The Longhorns reversed last season’s sweep against Baylor. They laid claim to being the nation’s unanimous No. 1 team when the week’s new polls come out Tuesday. They tightened their grip on a host spot for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Oh, and Texas kept its hopes of winning the Big 12 regular-season championship for the first time since 2010 alive since the Longhorns trail Oklahoma by just one game in the conference standings. Texas would hold a potential tiebreaking edge over Oklahoma for any seeding purposes since the Longhorns won the season series between the Red River rivals.

“It was a good weekend,” Texas coach Mike White said. “And they (the Longhorns) have had a tough stretch with a lot of games. They're going to have a solid two days off this week, which is going to really help us regroup and get ready for that trip to Kansas (next weekend).”

Like in Saturday’s 9-6 win, Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez struggled while allowing three runs and six hits through the first two innings. But like Saturday, Texas’ deep rotation again bailed out the Longhorns.

Mac Morgan entered the game in the third frame and stifled the Bears with four hitless innings before Baylor tacked on two runs in the seventh.

“I just did my job,” Morgan said. “I let my defense do the work.”

While Baylor (22-17, 5-13) struggled, the Texas bats stayed hot. The Longhorns erased Baylor’s 3-2 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second and kept piling on as the game wore on. Reese Atwood continued her assault on several single-season records by going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in four runs, including a solo homer over the left-field wall. Ashton Maloney went 4-for-4 and scored three runs from her leadoff spot, and Mia Scott scored three runs and drove in two in a pair with a double during the second inning.

Texas (35-6, 14-4 Big 12) is currently ranked atop the ESPN/USA Softball poll and stand No. 2 in the USA Today/NFCA poll behind three-time defending national champion Oklahoma, which lost Friday to BYU. Every team ranked in the top five of either poll besides Texas also lost this past week.

The Longhorns climbed to the top of the polls early in March but quickly fell a few spots after a road loss at Houston. After Sunday’s win, Morgan said the team doesn’t have any concerns about handling the pressure of regaining the No. 1 spot.

“We're still not letting the outside noise affect us,” Morgan said. “We just want to play to who we are and just be confident in what we do.”

White agreed with Morgan, saying his team looks like the top squad in the country.

“Last time, we rented that spot,” he said. “Now, we want to own it.”
